This crossing cannot be booked. You turn up at the quay, take your place in the queue, and board — or not, if the boat is full. With six departures a day and a forty-five minute crossing, missing one costs two or three hours; in high season, on a route that leads to the beaches of Senja, it happens.
Hence the point of aiming for the first sailing. And to catch the first sailing, it helps not to have the drive from Tromsø ahead of you at dawn.
Sommarøy sits three and a half kilometres from the Brensholmen quay. You sleep by the water, you get up, and you are aboard before the others have left Tromsø. The day on Senja starts three hours earlier.

Fishermen's apartments on the quay at Senjahopen, in the north of Senja.

A hotel and its apartments at the water's edge, in southern Senja, far from anywhere.
