How these figures were read
Color Line's booking engine shows an all-inclusive price and says so explicitly: two adults, one vehicle and a standard cabin. For the departure on Saturday 15 August 2026 at 14:00, on the Color Magic, it asks €835. That is by far the most expensive package of the four overnight crossings on this page. The operator's calendar also gives away something you rarely get to see: within that same week, the Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday and Monday departures go for €700, Tuesday for €775, Friday and Saturday for €835. Shifting your departure by a day or two therefore saves €135, without changing anything else about the trip. As a floor price, Color Line separately advertises a package from NOK 2,500 (€232) per person, minimum two people, car and standard inside cabin included, one way. The gap between that floor and the real quote for 15 August — €417.50 per person — is a measure in itself of what "from" is worth in high season. Second check, Thursday 12 November 2026, on the 14:00 Color Fantasy: €540. That week's calendar shows only two levels instead of three — €540 Monday to Sunday, €700 on Saturday 14. The same trip therefore costs €295 less than on a Saturday in August, and the November Saturday comes out at exactly the price of the cheapest day in August.
Sampled on 31 July 2026Dynamic pricing: it depends on the date, the departure time and how far ahead you book. This figure gives an order of magnitude, not a guaranteed fare.
✓ What works in its favour
Around 900 km of driving and two Danish bridge tolls avoided.
The Color Fantasy and the Color Magic are cruise ships: restaurants, shows, shops — the crossing is part of the trip.
Departure every day at 14:00 from Kiel and from Oslo, all year round.
Oslo is no dead end: the RV7 crosses the Hardangervidda to Bergen in about 7 hours and the E134 runs over the Haukeli towards Rogaland — the fjords are one fast day's drive away.
✕ What works against it
By far the most expensive: €835 for two people, the car and the cabin on 15 August 2026, when Copenhagen – Oslo asks €408.50 for an equivalent package.
Only one departure a day, and Kiel is a long way off if you are coming from southern Europe.
Where you land
The Hjortnes quay, inside Oslo itself. Zero kilometres of driving on arrival.
Who this crossing suits
Anyone setting off from Germany, anyone who wants to turn the journey into a mini cruise, and anyone heading for Oslo — from where the RV7 and the E134 put Bergen and Rogaland within a day's drive.

🎫 International route: every passenger pays a fare, on top of the vehicle. The AutoPASS rule (one flat price per vehicle, whatever the number of occupants) applies only to domestic Norwegian ferries.
This is the route that removes the most driving. Twenty hours at sea, a departure every day at 14:00 from Kiel and from Oslo, and around 900 km of driving saved — plus the two Danish bridge tolls you will not be paying.
The Color Fantasy and the Color Magic are not ferries in the usual sense, they are cruise ships: restaurants, shows, shops. The crossing stops being a chore and becomes part of the trip, which makes a real difference when you are travelling with children or with older relatives who find long drives tiring.
The price follows, and heavily. For two people, a car and a standard cabin on Saturday 15 August 2026, the Color Line engine asks €835. The same package costs €575 to Bergen, €550 to Stavanger and €408.50 from Copenhagen: Kiel – Oslo therefore costs twice the price of the Danish route. What you buy on top is the 900 km of driving avoided and twenty hours on a cruise ship — whether that is worth it is your call. One simple reflex claws part of it back: the operator's calendar shows €700 on midweek departures against €835 on Friday and Saturday, so €135 for a one-day shift. And if you are coming from southern Europe, Kiel is already a long way off anyway. The seasonal lever is stronger still: on Thursday 12 November 2026 the same package drops to €540, and the Saturday of that week to €700, in other words the price of the cheapest day in August. Between the worst day in August and the best in November, the gap reaches €295 on a strictly identical trip. Copenhagen – Oslo, for its part, falls to €126.50: the ratio between the two routes goes from one to two in August to one to four in November.
One last point, often misunderstood: arriving in Oslo does not shut you into the east of the country. The RV7 crosses the Hardangervidda plateau and reaches Bergen in about seven hours, the E134 runs over the Haukeli towards Rogaland. The fjords are a day's drive away — a fine drive in summer, one to avoid in winter.
Budget €540 to €835, depending on the date and the season, for two people, the car and the cabin. The price is dynamic: it depends on the date, the departure time and how far ahead you book. Checked on 31 July 2026 in the operator's booking engine, it gives an order of magnitude, not a guaranteed fare.
Do you need to book?
