A four-star on the Schmiedestraße, next to the market square and the town hall.

A five-star on the bank of the Trave, facing the salt storehouses and the old town.
⚠️ General times, subject to change: they shift from one date to the next, and the operator sometimes swaps the ship. Exact times appear at the booking stage.
There are two ways to get from northern Germany to southern Sweden. The first is to drive up through all of Schleswig-Holstein, cross Denmark end to end, and pay the Øresund bridge on arrival. The second takes one night: turn up at Travemünde late in the evening, go aboard, sleep, and open your eyes in Skåne.
This is not the fastest crossing on the Baltic, and it does not claim to be. Its point lies elsewhere: those eight to ten hours are hours you would otherwise have spent driving. You trade a day on the road for a night's sleep, and start the next morning rested rather than six hundred kilometres deep.
The cabin is not a luxury on this crossing, it is the instruction manual. Lounge seats and deck places exist for daytime sailings and are perfectly adequate. But on a ship leaving around 22:00 to arrive early the next morning, the cabin is what turns a journey into a night in a hotel.

From €62 per person on a lounge deck for a daytime crossing, without a vehicle. On a night sailing it is €107 for a seat and around €171 for a cabin, again per person. Sampled 20 September and 6 October 2026; pricing is dynamic and the vehicle is charged separately.
From 7 hours 30 to 11 hours 15 depending on the sailing. TT-Line advertises 8 hours on its site, but the crossings actually offered spread far wider: 7h30 on the quickest, 9 hours on the night boat, up to 11h15 on some rotations. Sampled 24 September 2026 across four days of the week. Allow the longer figure.
Two to three you can book as a foot passenger, plus a few more rotations that only open to travellers with a vehicle. TT-Line also runs freight on this route: the 02:45 sailing, for instance, shows no price until you add a vehicle to the search. On foot, count on the late-morning boat and the 22:00 one. Sampled 24 September 2026.
Yes, in every category: inside, outside, family, comfort, pet-friendly and wheelchair-accessible. On a night sailing this is what makes the crossing worthwhile. Daytime departures also offer lounge seats and deck places, which cost considerably less.
Five ships take turns depending on the rotation: the Tinker Bell, the Nils Holgersson, the Peter Pan, the Nils Dacke and the Huckleberry Finn. One warning if you look elsewhere: TT-Line introduced new Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan ships in 2022-2023, and the older vessels of the same names are still circulating in databases.
Check-in opens about three hours before departure and closes thirty minutes before. That is tighter than on many routes: twenty minutes stuck in Lübeck traffic is enough to miss the ship. Do check the details when you book.
